SKWC Season 6 Announcement
Xander Clements, September 4th, 2015
A time for new beginnings and a way to honor the end of an era, the sixth season of the Sim Karting World Championship is now upon us. New teams have been forged, and rivalries have been rekindled. October 3rd, the series will once again roar to life this time with a slightly different sound - the IAME Leopard. This engine was originally introduced in the mid-2ooos, and has since been in a transitional period on the real-life spectrum with the IAME X30, its successor. As a warm send off into the history books, the SKWC will host its last season of 2015 with the last official season using the older engine.
Many familiar names have come back and are already putting drivers together in hopes of not only claiming individual glory with the driver's championship, but also the constructor's cup. This team championship will have new names for almost every entrant, and could see a new owner hoist the trophy.
Also new for this season will be the introduction of group qualifying and super pole. Similar to previous seasons, drivers will be split into groups as large as 6 based on their lap times in final practice. Each group will be given five minutes, without staggering, and each driver may reset to pit as much as he/she may feel the need to. After all groups have qualified, the top 6 from the combined results will each be given two additional laps with an open track, to determine the top starting positions - super pole. The results from this will set the order for the top 6 in the final qualifying results.
What will make this season most interesting is the lack of a rev limiter on the engine. The Leopard is standard to running in the 16k RPM range, but within the draft these RPMs may sky rocket and could make draft a big advantage. That said, there is also an extreme oversteer factor when behind other karts, so drivers will have to strategize their qualifying runs in hopes of achieving the best overall lap time.
The last new aspect to this season is the track announcement date for each round. Exactly 48 hours prior to the drivers meeting of the race event, the circuit will be announced on the website and forums for all drivers to see. This is to eliminate some of the excess testing that is done, and essentially level the playing field for those who do not have ample time to exhaust on the sim.
